Caps and Gowns

With less then 80 days till graduation there seems to be a thousand things that need to get done before that big day comes. Something you have to do, if you want to participate in commencement, is order your cap and gown.  You don’t want to wait till the last minute and have to pay additional fees so make sure to order yours as soon as possible! Here is the link Chapman provided to order all things graduation: https://www.cbgrad.com/order1TN.asp?id=723448823&secure=yes .

Here are some quick facts about your cap and gown that might help you decide what to wear underneath:

  • Your academic gown is made of a synthetic fabric blend, so it tends to be warm on a hot day and will not provide warmth on a cold day.
  • The gown is black, and will soak up rays on a sunny day, no matter what the temperature is.
  • Your cap comes with elastic in the hat for a flexible fit, so the days of ill-fitting caps are over, thankfully, but it will hug your head nevertheless. Count on it to give you “hat hair”.
  • Footwear should be comfortable enough to tolerate standing for a long time, walking on uneven levels, and going up and down stairs. High heels are a safety hazard due to the uneven, spongy turf surface and should be avoided. Bare feet are not permitted.

Chapman has an optional all-University stole that is available to graduating students which is available on the website provided above. There are also sashes available representing Chapman organizations and schools, to honor a family heritage, or to proclaim a vocational aspiration. The wearing of multiple sashes is permitted.

Seniors who are candidates for “Latin Honors at Commencement” have a 3.50 overall have accumulated 54 Chapman-in-residence units taken for a letter grade by the end of Spring 2011, and have completed all academic requirements for graduation by May are eligible to purchase a cardinal and gray all-university Honors Cord. This cord is optional but signifies your honor standing! To purchase the cord you need to go to the gift shop in Argyros Forum. Check in at the cash register to verify that your name is on the “Candidate for Latin Honors at Commencement List” and provide ID. Honor cords are worn during Commencement around the shoulders with the tassels hanging down the front of the gown.

Students who have participated in Chapman’s Study Abroad program may wear sashes to designate the countries they visited. For more information call 714.997.6830.

Recognition cords, pins and medals awarded by Chapman organizations and academic departments may be worn with cap and gown.

Students may decorate their caps. So feel free to take the time to decorate your cap to fit your personal style!
